Passive component supplier Kemet Corp. has acquired several product lines from Greatbatch-Sierra Inc., a Carson City, Nev., supplier of high-voltage ceramic capacitors and EMI filters, in an attempt to diversify its line of ceramic, tantalum, and aluminum capacitors. Though Kemet declined to reveal the amount of the transaction, a spokesman said it was worth “a few million dollars” and was not expected to have an immediate material effect on the company's earnings. He added the acquisition was the first ever by the Greenville, S.C., company, which became an independent company in December 1990 after being part of Union Carbide Corp. since 1919. “The company's strategy has always been organic growth,” the spokesman said. “But now, we need to accelerate the pace of innovation.” He added Kemet would consider additional acquisitions but declined to be specific. The product lines Kemet acquired serve the oil exploration and military markets and carry higher margins than the company's commodity passives, the spokesman added.
