Oscillators

Oscillators convert unidirectional current flow into a regular, alternating (or oscillating) waveform. This waveform is typically a sine wave, square wave, or a triangle wave of some designated frequency. Oscillators are built around components like amplifiers, "flip flops" and operational amplifiers (op-amps) to help generate and control the new waveform. To proudce a continuous oscillating signal, oscillators take DC current from a power source and convert it to alternating current. In some cases, oscillators can be fully self-sustaining and generate an output signal with no input signal at all.

The Pierce oscillator is a simple type oscillator that is commonly used in crystal oscilltors to create a stable oscillation frequency.
