ASML, one of the world’s leading suppliers of chip equipment in the semiconductor industry, recently experienced a data breach. Representatives for the Dutch firm claimed that a former employee based in China was responsible for the theft.
This data theft is yet another example of many similar occurrences affecting businesses, small to large. Like other instances of data theft in recent years, the ASML incident is a potential learning experience for many regarding the security threats out there.
What Is ASML, and Why Is This Company Important?
ASML is a manufacturer of different types of chip-making equipment. Specifically, the company manufactures lithography machines that are instrumental in manufacturing chips, including those used in the semiconductor industry. The company has worked with many clients over the years, including Intel. Intel is a leading electronics manufacturer that uses ASML equipment in its manufacturing plants to produce microchips for various devices.
ASML is a big mover and shaker in the semiconductor industry. In fact, one Gartner study claimed it has 90 percent of control over the international market for chip-making lithography equipment. The company is also the only source of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography photolithography machinery.
What Happened With ASML?
Earlier in February, ASML revealed that one of its former employees in China committed theft after determining that “unauthorized misappropriation of data” had occurred. ASML didn’t disclose precisely what data the offending party stole. But representatives did mention that the company would be taking steps to tighten security following the incident. Ultimately, ASML doesn’t believe the company or the industry at large will suffer from the data theft incident.
How Often Does This Type of Data Theft Occur?
Unfortunately, data theft incidents like the one ASML recently experienced are more common than they should be. This recent incident is actually the second one ASML has experienced involving a threat based in China. According to ASML’s 2021 report, the company claimed that DongFang JinYuan Electron—a technology firm in Beijing—had stolen intellectual property that year.
This kind of data theft has also impacted other businesses around the world in the semiconductor industry. Another incident in recent history involved American firm Micron Technology, which accused United Microelectronics Corp., a firm in Taiwan, of stealing resources to develop DRAM semiconductor chips for China. Micron’s DRAM chips are responsible for supplying power to many types of devices. Applications range from computers and smartphones to TVs and vehicles.
What Was the Impact of the ASML Data Theft?

The big concern over the data theft involving ASML is that of sustainability among European suppliers. Peter Wennink, chief executive officer at ASML, expressed his concerns regarding this matter in the wake of the recent data theft during an interview for Politico. During this interview, Wennink stated:
“If you shut out the Chinese with export control measures, you’ll force them to strive toward tech sovereignty . . . In 15 years’ time, they’ll be able to do it all by themselves.” As a result, he mentions, the market for suppliers based in Europe “will be gone.”
In short, the relationships between international suppliers and other countries will become obsolete if enough countries steal data for their own use and development. Without a mutual relationship, countries can suffer as they become less important to the development of others.

Based on the details seen with the recent ASML data theft, data theft is far from becoming a nonissue in the semiconductor industry and others. Countries like China seek tech sovereignty. They may resort to intellectual property theft to get there, particularly when companies like ASML have critical pieces of technology behind them.
